A local brew 'changaa' house owned any run by John Keguro and Grace Wanjiru (centre and right). Nancy Wambui, with her 4 year old son Eurisis, comes to buy a 'guava' or bottle for KSh. 40/- (approx. 50 US cents) and a bag of 'miraa' or ghat which when chewed gives an 'escape high'. Alcohol and drugs are often used to dull the pain of poverty and frustration but the offset is violence and sometimes rape.
This image is from a series focusing on and around the rape and the women victims that occur every half a day in Mugumoini Village in Nairobi's Southlands, a slum home to 20,000 people in abject poverty with little or no income, with the aim of creating exposure and empowerment for change. ©GGoodwin
